Don't Do That With Chopsticks: Travel Etiquette Tips
As a freelance writer, one of my frequent occupations involves writing travel guides for international tourists to Japan. I've not yet traveled there myself, but immersing myself in the culture helps to get the creative juices flowing. A steaming cup of matcha, a plate full of sushi, chopsticks in hand - that, plus a keyboard, represents a typical weekday afternoon.
There are, however, certain things that should never be done with chopsticks (at least if you want to avoid a cultural faux pas). Sure, you may know not to scratch your back with them, but have you ever left these utensils standing upright in a bowl of rice? Or, have you handed off a morsel of food from your chopsticks to someone else's?
If so, never fear. Simply read this article by Cara Siera, originally published by a Japan Rail Pass vendor. Not only will you discover chopstick etiquette, but we'll introduce you to the in's and out's of bowing, restaurant tipping, removing your shoes, and more!
